In short
Most Invisalign treatment takes 12 to 18 months. Minor front-tooth crowding or a small gap can finish in 6 to 9 months. Bite corrections, rotations and cases needing extractions run 18 to 24 months or longer. Anyone quoting a timeline before seeing your scan is guessing.
The number that actually controls your finish date is how many hours a day you wear the aligners. The prescription is 20–22 hours. Drop to 14 and the teeth stop tracking the plan, the next aligner will not seat properly, and the treatment stretches — often by months.
And one honest correction to the marketing: for mild to moderate crowding, a systematic review found no significant difference in treatment duration between clear aligners and fixed braces. Aligners are more comfortable and far less visible. They are not reliably faster.

Typical timelines by case type
"How long does Invisalign take" has no single answer because the aligners are not the variable — your teeth are. What follows are the ranges seen in ordinary practice, against the type of problem being corrected. Your own number comes from the digital treatment plan, where the number of aligners is set before you start.
| What is being corrected | Typical duration | Roughly how many aligners |
|---|---|---|
| Minor relapse after old braces | 4–7 months | 10–20 |
| Small gap or mild front crowding | 6–9 months | 14–26 |
| Moderate crowding, both arches | 12–18 months — the most common outcome | 26–45 |
| Overbite or deep bite correction | 15–24 months | 35–60 |
| Severe crowding needing extractions | 18–30 months, sometimes with fixed braces instead | 50+ |
Add refinements to whatever number you are given. After the first series of aligners, teeth rarely land exactly where the software predicted. A second scan and a short extra set — the refinement stage — is normal rather than a sign something went wrong, and it typically adds 2 to 4 months. A clinic that never mentions refinements is quoting you a best case, not a plan.
What actually decides your timeline
Five things move the finish date. Only one of them is under your control, and it happens to be the strongest.
| Factor | Effect on how long it takes |
|---|---|
| Daily wear time | The big one. 20–22 hours a day is the prescription. Consistently wearing less means teeth fall behind the plan, aligners stop seating, and the series has to be re-made from a new scan. |
| How far teeth must move | Each aligner moves teeth a fraction of a millimetre. Distance dictates the number of aligners, and the number of aligners dictates the months. |
| Type of movement | Tipping a tooth is quick. Rotating a round canine, moving a root, or closing a bite is slow and may need attachments or elastics. |
| Aligner change interval | Usually every 7 to 14 days, set by the clinician for your case. Changing early on your own does not speed anything up — it causes aligners to stop fitting. |
| Age and bone response | Teeth move throughout life, but adult bone remodels more slowly than a teenager's. The same plan often runs slightly longer at 45 than at 15. |
Two words worth knowing before you agree to a plan
Attachments. Small tooth-coloured bumps bonded to some teeth so the aligner has something to grip. They are what makes rotations and bite changes possible, and they are removed at the end. If a provider promises complex movement with no attachments, ask how.
IPR. Interproximal reduction — polishing a fraction of a millimetre between crowded teeth to create space. Routine and safe within limits, but you should be told in advance if it is in your plan and on which teeth.
Is Invisalign faster than braces?
This is the claim most often made and least often supported. A systematic review comparing clear aligners with fixed appliances in crowding cases found no significant difference in treatment duration between the two for mild to moderate crowding — and the authors graded the evidence as low, noting that patient and treatment factors matter more than the appliance itself (systematic review, PubMed). A separate review of outcome quality and stability reaches similarly measured conclusions (systematic review and meta-analysis, PubMed).
Where aligners genuinely win is everything other than speed: they are removable, nearly invisible, easier to clean around, and more comfortable than brackets and wires. Where fixed braces still win is control — severe rotations, large root movements and extraction cases remain more predictable on a wire.
Choose aligners for
Mild to moderate crowding, spacing and relapse after previous orthodontics.
Adults who cannot wear visible braces at work.
Anyone who will realistically keep them in 22 hours a day.
Consider fixed braces for
Severe crowding, extraction cases and large skeletal discrepancies.
Complex rotations and significant root movement.
Patients who know they will not manage the discipline of removable aligners.
What it can fix — and what it can't
The honest boundary matters, because attempting a case outside it is the fastest way to end up eighteen months in with a result nobody is happy with.
| Problem | Suitable for aligners? |
|---|---|
| Crowding, spacing, gaps | Yes — this is the core indication and where results are most predictable. |
| Overbite / deep bite | Often yes for mild to moderate cases, usually with attachments and sometimes elastics. Adds months. |
| Underbite / crossbite | Sometimes, when the cause is dental rather than skeletal. A skeletal underbite is an orthodontic-surgical question, not an aligner one. |
| Severe rotations, extraction cases | Possible in experienced hands, but fixed braces are frequently the better tool. |
| Untreated decay or gum disease | No — these are treated first. Moving teeth in inflamed, unstable bone risks losing them. |
Daily habits that add months
Every one of these questions is really a wear-time question, which is why they belong in an article about duration rather than in a lifestyle list. Twenty minutes lost here and there, three times a day, is two hours off the daily total — and that is the difference between finishing in fourteen months and finishing in twenty.
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| Can you eat with Invisalign? | No — take them out for every meal and snack. Chewing with aligners in cracks them and pushes teeth off plan. Grazing through the day is the most common reason people miss their wear target. |
| Can you drink with them in? | Plain cold water only. Tea, coffee and red wine stain the plastic; hot drinks can warp it; anything sugary or acidic sits trapped against enamel and causes decay. |
| Can you chew gum? | Not with aligners in — it sticks and deforms them. Remove first, and remember that counts against your daily hours. |
| Can you smoke or vape? | Both discolour aligners quickly and vaping's heat can distort them. Beyond the plastic, smoking works against gum health during tooth movement — the reason to stop is bigger than the aligners. |
| How do you clean them? | Rinse in cool water and brush gently with a soft brush, no toothpaste — abrasives scratch the plastic and make it cloudy. Brush your teeth before putting them back in. |
The habit that finishes treatment on time: aligners go back in the moment you finish eating, not when you next think about it. Patients who treat the case in their pocket as the default place for aligners are the ones whose treatment runs long — and the extra months cost nothing to the clinic and everything to you.
Does it hurt, and for how long?
Pressure rather than pain is the usual description. Each new aligner feels tight for the first two or three days, then settles as the teeth respond. Most people find the first week of the whole treatment the most noticeable, and the sensation becomes routine after that.
Two practical points. Changing to a new aligner in the evening means the tightest hours happen while you sleep. And soreness that does not settle after a few days, or a sharp edge cutting into the gum, is worth reporting rather than enduring — an edge can be smoothed in minutes.
Having aligner treatment in Turkey
Aligner treatment travels better than most dental work, because the appointments after the start are few and short. The plan is built once from a 3D scan, the aligners are manufactured as a full series, and the months in between are you wearing them at home.
| Stage | What happens |
|---|---|
| Before you travel | Photos and an X-ray are reviewed remotely to confirm aligners are the right tool for your case at all. |
| Visit one — 2 to 4 days | Examination, any hygiene or fillings needed first, 3D intraoral scan, treatment plan approved, attachments bonded and the first aligners fitted. |
| Months at home | You change aligners on schedule and send progress photos at agreed intervals. Further aligners are shipped as the series proceeds. |
| Finishing visit | Attachments removed, polishing, a new scan for refinements if needed, and retainers made. |
Ask these before committing to treatment abroad
1. How are aligners delivered between visits, and is shipping included?
2. How is progress monitored remotely, and how often?
3. Are refinement aligners included in the price, or charged separately?
4. Are retainers included, and what does a replacement cost in two years?
Retainers are not optional, and this is the part people skip. Teeth drift back towards where they started, most quickly in the first year. A retainer worn at night, indefinitely, is what protects eighteen months of work. Budget for replacing it every few years — a lost retainer replaced late is how people end up needing a second course of aligners. Frequently asked questions
How long does Invisalign take?
Most cases take 12 to 18 months. Minor crowding or a small gap can finish in 6 to 9 months, while bite correction and extraction cases run 18 to 24 months or more. Your own figure comes from the digital treatment plan, which sets the number of aligners before you start — and a refinement stage of 2 to 4 months is common on top.
How long does Invisalign take to work?
Teeth begin moving with the first aligner, and most people notice a visible change in the front teeth within 6 to 10 weeks. Seeing early movement is not the same as being finished — the later aligners do the detailed work that makes the result stable.
How many hours a day do you wear Invisalign?
Twenty to twenty-two hours, removed only for eating, drinking anything other than plain water, and cleaning. Consistently wearing them less is the single most common reason treatment takes longer than planned.
Is Invisalign faster than braces?
Not reliably. A systematic review of crowding cases found no significant difference in treatment duration between clear aligners and fixed appliances for mild to moderate crowding, with the evidence graded as low. Aligners are chosen for comfort and appearance rather than speed.
Can Invisalign fix an overbite or underbite?
Mild to moderate overbites are often treatable with aligners, usually with attachments and sometimes elastics, which adds months to the plan. Underbites can be treated when the cause is dental; a skeletal underbite is a different question and may need orthodontic-surgical planning rather than aligners alone.
Does Invisalign hurt?
Most people describe pressure rather than pain, strongest in the first two or three days of each new aligner and most noticeable in the first week overall. Changing aligners in the evening moves the tightest hours into the night. Pain that does not settle, or a sharp edge cutting the gum, should be reported rather than tolerated.
Can you eat, drink or smoke with Invisalign in?
Take them out to eat, and drink only plain cold water while wearing them — hot drinks warp the plastic and tea, coffee and wine stain it. Smoking and vaping discolour aligners quickly and vaping's heat can distort them. Every removal counts against your daily wear total, which is why grazing is the enemy of a short treatment.
Is Invisalign worth it?
For the right case and a patient who will wear them consistently, yes — straighter teeth are easier to clean and the appliance is barely visible. For someone who knows they will not manage 22 hours a day, fixed braces achieve more, because they work whether or not you remember them.
Do I have to wear a retainer afterwards?
Yes, indefinitely, usually at night. Teeth drift back towards their original position, fastest in the first year after treatment. A retainer is what makes the result permanent, and replacing a lost one promptly is far cheaper than repeating treatment.
